We Like Us: Karlheinz Weinberger, Katsumi Watanabe, Chris Killip, Frank Rock n`Roll, and Jim Mangan

Nonaka-Hill Kyoto is pleased to present We Like Us, an exhibition featuring the work of four photographers—Karlheinz Weinberger, Katsumi Watanabe, Chris Killip, Frank Rock n`Roll, and Jim Mangan—on view from April 12 to May 24.

The exhibition brings together works that shed light on communities who have chosen to live at a remove from mainstream society, forging their own paths on the margins or in closer connection with nature. From Weinberger’s Halbstarke, a series portraying Swiss youth influenced by the rebel energy of 1950s American pop culture, to Mangan’s The Crick, a study of young Mormon fundamentalists maintaining a distinct way of life in the wake of their leader’s death, each series documents lives lived outside the dominant narrative.

The photographers were drawn to their subjects’ way of life and sense of style, taking time to build trust and gradually immerse themselves in their worlds. The resulting images quietly and beautifully capture a spirit of self-acceptance—a quiet refusal to conform and a shared sense that “we’re just fine as we are.”

Nonaka-Hill 京都は、4月12日 - 5月24日まで、 カールハインツ・ワインバーガー、渡辺克己、クリス・キリップ、フランクのロックン・ロール、ジム・マンガン による４人の写真家の展示「We Like Us」を開催いたします。

本展は、1950年代のアメリカ文化に影響を受けたスイスの不良たちを捉えたワインバーガーのシリーズ「Halbstarke」や、宗教的指導者を失いながらも独自の生活様式を守り続けるモルモン教徒の若者たちに迫ったマンガンの「The Crick」など、既存の社会から距離を置き、社会の周縁や自然の中で自らの生を貫く人々に光を当てた作品で構成されています。

写真家たちは、被写体の生き方や美学に共鳴し、時間をかけて信頼関係を築きながら、その世界に深く入り込んで撮影しています。外の世界に迎合することなく「私たちはこのままでいい」と自らの在り方を肯定するコミュニティーの姿が静かに、美しく映し出されています。
