Overview

Shigeru Hasegawa (b. 1963, Japan) is a contemporary Japanese painter whose introspective and evocative works explore the complexities of self-confrontation and human experience. Based in Tokyo, Hasegawa’s practice is deeply rooted in the act of painting as a means of personal and philosophical inquiry. His bold, expressive compositions often blend abstract and figurative elements, reflecting influences from both Japanese artistic traditions and global modernist movements. Hasegawa’s work has garnered attention for its emotional depth and dynamic visual language, earning him a prominent place in Japan’s contemporary art scene.

Hasegawa’s career began to gain momentum in the early 2000s, with his first significant solo exhibitions in Tokyo and Aichi. His paintings, which often feature vibrant colors and textured surfaces, have been exhibited in prestigious institutions across Japan and internationally.

Notable solo shows include his 2022 exhibition at Satoko Oe Gallery in Tokyo and a unique presentation at Shouonji-temple in 2021, which integrated his work into a spiritual context. Hasegawa’s art is held in esteemed public collections, including the Aichi University of the Arts, Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Museum, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka.

Beyond his studio practice, Hasegawa is recognized for his engagement with community and educational initiatives, such as his 2010 open studio at Fuchu Art Museum. His work continues to resonate with audiences for its ability to bridge personal introspection with universal themes, making him a vital voice in contemporary Japanese art.
