I was reading a book by Japanese writer Michiko Ishimure. A passage about the hardships of a rice farmer back in the day left an impression on me. “How do you write the word rice? Live 88 nights (hachi-jyu-hachi-ya) upside down. It is truly like turning your body upside down and planting your hair with the rice.” One day, a mom friend invited me to lunch. The group of moms spoke not only about their children, but some were also gossiping about other children, but it was peaceful. At night on the news was a story about two children, the same age as my child, who died in a fire while home alone.
