Art Collaboration Kyoto: Nonaka-Hill collaboration with Shibunkaku
Art Collaboration Kyoto (ACK) is an art fair held in Kyoto under the theme of “contemporary art and collaboration.” It is one of the largest art fairs in Japan specializing in contemporary art, and is unique in the collaborations it forges between Japanese and international galleries, government and private sectors, and the fine arts and other fields.
For ACK, Shibunkaku and Nonaka-Hill are pleased to present a selection of works which transcend time and space to find an audacious and almost theatrical harmony. Mural scaled depictions of serene nature, produced three centuries apart by Rimpa master Ogata Kōrin and by contemporary artist Ulala Imai, set the stage for the lush, nature examinations by New York based painter Ellen Altfest, by modern Nihon-ga master Matazō Kayama and by Zenzaburo Kojima, a legendary Yō-ga artist. A theme of pure material physicality unites the arrangement of Kazuo Kadonaga’s massive sliced and reassembled log with Eiji Uematsu’s sculptural forms evolved from clay cubes and Masaomi Yasunaga’s vessels formed of glaze which appear to have been excavated from centuries ago. Altogether, the works created by artists from different periods and backgrounds will evoke a quiet twilight-to-nocturnal aura that brings a rich and deep breath.
About Shibunkaku:
Established in 1937, Shibunkaku has been committed to the inheritance and promotion of Japanese culture through art gallery operation, antiquarian book dealing and academic publishing.
